{n 2018 the Woman’s Club of Spring Lake (WCSL) is proud to be celebrating its Centennial. Founded in November of 1918 by a group of twenty-nine women who were interested in bettering themselves and their community, the club has been carrying on a tradition of service through support of charitable, educational and social causes. As part of this special anniversary celebration, the WCSL has launched a “10,000 hours of Community Service” initiative for its members who will be volunteering and participating in many events over the next twelve months hoping to achieve the 10,000 hour mark by May 2019. The Centennial celebration was kicked off at the club’s annual “Spring Luncheon” held at The Breakers on the Ocean on May 23. At this event, the club awarded scholarships to three local high school seniors and to four women who are returning to college to complete their undergraduate degrees. The volunteer efforts of the club members will continue at many more events throughout the coming year, steadily working toward their goal.
THE WOMAN'S CLUB OF SPRING LAKE HELD ITS ANNUAL SPRING LUNCHEON
The Woman’s Club of Spring Lake held their annual Spring Luncheon and Installation of Officers at the Breakers on May 23. The program’s theme was “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” after the title of a familiar book by Dr. Seuss. Mary Rottino, chair of the event,ofoffered best wishes to the scholarship winners and new board members as they prepare for “places they will go” and undertake new challenges and responsibilities. Our theme was carried into the décor with centerpieces created by Kathleen Reddick, chair of the Arts Creative committee. Before awarding the scholarship certificates, Anne Butler, chair of the Scholarship Committee, explained the process used by her committee to review applications, interview candidates, and select winners.
The 2018 recipients include three local high school seniors: Jessica G. Grable of Spring Lake, Colleen Hull of Spring Lake Heights, and Ebenezer Shim of Spring Lake Heights. Ms. Grable will be attending Virginia Polytechnic University majoring in Mathematics. Ms. Hull will be attending Bucknell University and is planning to major in International Business. Ms. Shim will be attending Boston College and majoring in International Relations.
Three adult women, Stacy Karis of Wall, Anabel Rojas of Howell, and Eileen Ortiz of Ocean were honored with our “Returning Women” scholarships to help them complete their college degrees that had to be put on hold for various reasons. Ms. Karis will be attending Seton Hall University in South Orange to attain her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Ms. Rojas will be taking courses at Brookdale Community College working toward her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration as well. Ms. Ortiz is attending Brookdale Community College and will continue her studies to attain an associate’s degree in accounting. The awards also included a $1,000 Hannahlore Whitcomb Memorial Scholarship donated once again by Mr. and Mrs. Mark Whitcomb in memory of his mother, Hannahlore Whitcomb. This award was presentd by Mr. Whitcomband given to Ms. Dorothy Jose of Freehold. Ms. Jose is presently attending Brookdale Community College and will continue herstudies toward obtaining a nursing degree. In total, the Woman’s Club awarded $14,000 in scholarships. These funds came fromvarious events the club sponsored through the past year, including our highly successful Fall Luncheon that raised thousands of dollars.
SERVING WATER FOR THE SPRING LAKE FIVE
Members of the Woman’s Club of Spring Lake recently distributed water to participants in the Spring Lake Five. This effort was part of a campaign for club members to volunteer “10,000” hours of community service in honor of the celebration of the club’s 100th anniversary. During this Centennial year, the organization plans to have at least one event each month to provide opportunities for service, fund raising for charities and the scholarship fund as well as promoting interest in membership. The Woman's Club of Spring Lake ran a very successful bake sale at the Irish Festival. Members sold homemade cakes, breads, and other items to support research for a cure for ALS as well as other local charities.
